In several of his books Foucault describes four such sequences in European (particularly French) history:
(1) the Renaissance (1450-1620),
(2) the Classical Age — sometimes called “the Age of Reason” (most of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries),
(3) the nineteenth century — sometimes called “the Age of Positivism,” and
(4) a future period of which the twentieth century is the beginning. Each of these periods is governed by what Foucault calls an “EPISTEME” (from the Greek word for “knowledge”).
